Introducing Project M5

October 30, 2009 | Project Cars | Project M5 | Andrew Wojteczko | Comments (0)

Our 2002 BMW M5 project car is part of the E39 family made up of 5 series from 1995-2004 and M5’s from 1998-2003. The E39 M5 was a breakthrough car in the sports sedan market when it was first launched. A spec list including individual throttle bodies, variable intake and exhaust camshaft timing and a 7,000 RPM redline resulting in 394 bhp from the 4.9-liter S62 V-8. Predominantly aluminum suspension consisting of a Macpherson strut front and multi link rear serves to keep unsprung weight to a minimum. A six-speed manual gearbox was standard equipment as well as larger brakes, limited slip differential and a lower ride height than the regular 5 series. All of this amounted to what was touted as the fastest 4-door sedan in the world when the M5 launched in 1998.

With the release of the E60 M5 in 2006, market value for the E39 M5 began to fall rapidly. With an abundance of performance and luxury and a price tag within reach, it was time to introduce an M5 to the Tune2Win project car family.

As with all used cars there are common failures and faults that must be addressed to enjoy a used E39 M5 to its fullest. Stay tuned as we cover the necessary maintenance items with detailed info to help the do-it-yourselfer keep the owning/operating costs in check. We will also look to improve upon the already awesome performance while testing every step of the way to ensure any upgrades are just that, an upgrade.
